Djokovic to Sinner: Five men to watch at Australian Open

Djokovic to Sinner: Five men to watch at Australian Open

Novak Djokovic is targeting an 11th Australian Open crown and a record 25th Grand Slam title. In the absence of injured Rafael Nadal, several younger players are out to stop him.

AFP Sport highlights five men to watch when the first Grand Slam of the year begins on Sunday:

Novak Djokovic

He may be 36 but the 24-time Grand Slam winner is still the man to beat after another hugely successful 2023, which included overcoming Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Melbourne final.

The Serbian finished the year as world number one after winning three of the four majors, with only Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon denying him a clean sweep.

In total, Djokovic claimed seven titles to take his career haul to 98, including a record-equalling seventh ATP Tour Finals crown.

A right wrist injury troubled him during his defeat to Alex de Minaur at the United Cup in Perth, but he now says he is “pain-free.”

Carlos Alcaraz

The 20-year-old Spaniard’s triumph over Djokovic on the grass at Wimbledon reinforced his status as the hottest prospect in men’s tennis.

His breakthrough for a maiden Slam title at the US Open in 2022 made him the youngest champion of a men’s major since compatriot Nadal at the 2005 French Open.

He also became the youngest man to ascend to world number one.

Now ranked number two, Alcaraz heads into the Australian Open as a serious contender after a year in which he collected six titles.

The unanswered question is whether he can overcome Djokovic on the blue hard courts of Melbourne, where the Serbian has dominated for so long.

Since Wimbledon, the pair have played twice, both on hard courts. Djokovic won both times.

Daniil Medvedev

The 27-year-old Russian is a two-time finalist at the opening Grand Slam of the year. He was outplayed by Djokovic in 2021 before a heart-wrenching defeat by Nadal a year later.

That narrow defeat in 2022 had a profound impact on Medvedev, who struggled to recapture the same form for the rest of the year and slipped out of the world’s top 10.

But a resurgent 2023 has again thrust him into the conversation as a title contender after winning 66 matches, more than any other player on tour last year.

The 2021 US Open champion is back up to world number three and will begin his bid for a second major title after a low-key build-up, skipping warm-up tournaments to focus on training.

Jannik Sinner

The 22-year-old Italian enjoyed a breakthrough in 2023, winning his first Masters title, in Toronto, and making the championship match against Djokovic at the ATP Finals.

He was also instrumental in helping Italy win the Davis Cup, beating Djokovic in three sets along the way.

It led to plenty of praise and expectations that it is only a matter of time before the former champion skier wins a major.

At a career-high four in the world, Sinner also won titles in Montpellier, Vienna and Beijing last season, notching wins over Alcaraz and Medvedev in the Chinese capital.

Alex de Minaur

The Australian has emerged as a threat at his home Grand Slam after a sensational start to the year, beating three top-10 players in a row at the United Cup.

They included Djokovic in straight sets, with Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz also falling victim to a player who spent the off-season improving his serve and backhand.

It has propelled the 24-year-old into the top 10, the first Australian to hold a top-10 spot since former world number one Lleyton Hewitt in July 2006.

De Minaur’s best result in a major is the quarter-finals at the US Open in 2020 and he has never gone beyond the fourth round at Melbourne Park.

But he will approach the tournament full of confidence, aiming to become the first Australian man to win his home Slam since Mark Edmondson in 1976.

Arsenal celebrates Iwobi’s World Cup ticket-winning goal, congratulates Nigeria

Arsenal celebrates Iwobi’s World Cup ticket-winning goal, congratulates Nigeria

English Premier League side, Arsenal FC, have celebrated their youngster, Alex Iwobi, who scored Nigeria’s solitary match-winner against the Chipolopolo of Zambia in Saturday’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Iwobi, who came in for Moses Simon in the tension-soaked match at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium Uyo, scored the winning goal in 73rd minute to send Nigeria to Russia 2018.

He repeated his feat of being the thorn in the Zambians’ side once again, having scored in the first Group B game between the sides.

Iwobi came off the bench in the second half to end Zambia’s hope of creating a final day climax on Nov. 6, only for the Super Eagles to book a spot in the finals.

The Gunners celebrated the Nigerian on their official Twitter handle.

“#BIG17 scores the winner as @NGSuperEagles beat Zambia in World Cup qualifying,” the Gunners tweeted.

The club also congratulated Nigeria for becoming the first African side to book a place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The club tweeted: “QUALIFIED! Congratulations, Nigeria!

“ The Super Eagles are the first African side to reach Russia!

“This looks sweet for @NGSuperEagles fans!#WCQ.”

The Super Eagles will now go into the match against Algeria with calm nerves, having earned an unassailable lead at the top of Group B.

Nigeria have amassed an unassailable 13 points after the 1-0 win against Zambia who maintain second position with seven points.

Seen by many as the toughest group of the continent’s five qualifying tables, Nigeria have been dominant, remaining unbeaten throughout and only dropping points to a Cameroonian penalty in Yaounde.

The 4-0 win a few days earlier against the reigning African champions was a spectacular highlight.

Led by the seasoned Mikel Obi, who made his belated World Cup debut at Brazil 2014, Super Eagles will be hoping to better their Round of 16 exit from the World Cup three years ago.

BAYO AKINLOYE

A former United States Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell, has described former President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife, Patience, as being arrogant and flamboyant when she was Nigeria’s first lady.

In a piece he wrote on Friday, ‘Nigerian President Buhari’s Sisyphean Efforts’, and posted on Council on Foreign Relations’ website, Campbell also wondered how Jonathan’s wife became wealthy having spent most of her life as a civil servant.

The ex-US envoy stated, “Patience Jonathan as the first lady was flamboyant, arrogant, and widely disliked. She has yet to be convicted of a crime. However, it is curious how a person who spent most of her career in public service could accumulate an acknowledged $35 million in a poor country.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is currently investigating Jonathan’s wife and has frozen four bank accounts belonging to her, while some property belonging to her have been seized. Among other actions taken by the EFCC was the freezing of Jonathan’s $35m.

The former first lady also claimed that the EFCC had frozen bank accounts belonging to some of her relatives, including that of her late mother, and accused the anti-graft agency of waging a “psychological war” against her for supporting Jonathan’s re-election bid in 2015.

Speaking on President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption fight, Campbell said, “There is pushback against President Buhari’s anti-corruption campaign, especially among the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. Some claim that Buhari is using the EFCC to go after his political enemies. In the predominately Christian parts of the country, there are also murmurs that the anti-corruption campaign is part of a Muslim effort against Christians.

“The Committee on Public Petitions in the House of Representatives has issued a warrant for the arrest of Magu(EFCC boss) because of his failure to appear before them with respect to a petition by Patience Jonathan. The committee’s move appears to be led by southern, Christian, PDP representatives.”

According to him, there is a tradition in Nigeria of presidents using the EFCC and other anti-corruption agencies against their political enemies.

“While it is true that under President Buhari, most of the high-profile investigations have been of PDP former officials in the Jonathan administration who are predominately Christian, these people were also, of course, in positions where they could loot public funds. Further, Christians dominated the Jonathan government, though the EFCC has also investigated Sambo Dasuki, Jonathan’s Muslim national security adviser, who remains under house arrest,” Campbell noted.
